John Newton 1779
Be still my heart! these anxious cares
To thee are burdens, thorns, and snares,
They cast dishonor on thy Lord,
And contradict His gracious word!
Brought safely by His hand thus far,
Why wilt thou now give place to fear?
How canst thou want if He provide,
Or lose thy way with such a guide?
When first before His mercy seat,
Thou didst to Him thy all commit;
He gave thee warrant, from that hour,
To trust His wisdom, love, and power.
Did ever trouble yet befall,
And He refuse to hear thy call?
And has He not His promise passed,
That thou shalt overcome at last?
He who has helped me hitherto,
Will help me all my journey through;
And give me daily cause to raise
New Ebenezers to His praise.
Though rough and thorny be the road,
It leads thee home, apace, to God;
Then count thy present trials small,
For Heav’n will make amends for all.
Be Still My Heart! ✨This has been a favorite hymn for 2020. My heart skips a happy beat every time I hear it! “How canst thou want if He provide, Or lose thy way with such a Guide?“ :) “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. HE maketh me to lie down in green pastures: HE leadeth me beside the still waters. HE restoreth my soul: HE leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for HIS name’s sake….”Psalm 23. I would love to hear the hymn that has been encouraging your heart lately! Leave a comment below and let me know. ?
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.”
Psalm 46:10-11
What a beautiful hymn, Rachel! It is so full of trust in our Heavenly Father and is very encouraging for the saints.
It is so sweet to think much on the love and care that our Father bestows in His children.
I have been thinking on the hymn,” Only in Thee”, by Thomas O. Chisholm. Only in our dear Saviour can peace be found. Nothing in this earth can compare with Him.
Amanda
Aw, amen! His love is infinite and unfailing. Daily being poured out on us! So thankful for that. I LOVE the hymn you shared. I don’t think I had ever heard of it before. THANK YOU for sharing, Amanda!! ?? This verse is beautiful :
Only in Thee, O Savior mine,
Dwelleth my soul in peace divine,
Peace that the world, though all combine,
Never can take from me.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
Day by day and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best
Lovingly, it’s part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.
Every day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Power.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.
Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s consolation
Offered me within Thy holy word.
Help me, Lord, when toil land trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.
Day by Day
Oh! That is a favorite of mine, Anna!! :) I love “Every day the Lord Himself is near me With a special mercy for each hour”. I am so thankful for His moment by moment mercies! ❤️❤️❤️
“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23
Rachel!!! How’d you know that was one of my favorite passages??? ???? Thanks for reminding me of it!!?
Thank you for sharing, Rachel. ❤
Last night, A Mighty Fortress came to mind. I’m threatened often to be undone and give into fear…”the prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him, his rage we can endure, for lo his doom is sure!” The only One I should tremble before is the LORD.
1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
2 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.
3 And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.
4 That Word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!
“You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same”
Amen….?❤️ I absolutely love that hymn, Rebekah! Have been singing it since your comment came in!! “From age to age the same, And He must win the battle.” He alone will win the battle. He is always victorious!
“The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14:14
Thanks for this encouraging post!❤️?I love the words to that hymn! A hymn I have been thinking of lately as I have been thinking more about God’s grace towards us is “Wonderful Grace of Jesus”
This is my favorite verse:
“Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching the most defiled,
By its transforming power,
Making him God’s dear child,
Purchasing peace and heaven
For all eternity—
And the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.”
Thanks again for sharing!❤️?
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
Romans 5:1-2
“Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame”
OOoooooOOOoooh!!!!!!! A favorite of mine too. I may have too many “favorites”!! ??? LOVE that portion from Romans too. PERFECT!
“For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”Psalm 103:11-12
Amen to all the wonderful old hymns! I love every one of them. My favorite hymn in our “Great Hymns of the Faith” hymn book is, “Be Still, My Soul.” It has provided comfort off and on over the years, through many deep sorrows and difficult trials, and has never lost its sweetness to my soul.
1. Be still my soul, the Lord is on thy side!
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide–
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still my soul, thy best, thy heavn’ly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2. Be still my soul, thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past;
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake–
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still my soul, the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below!
3. Be still my soul, the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still my soul, when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last!
Hehe! I was deciding between sharing “Be Still My Soul” and “Day by Day”! Thanks for sharing! ?
That’s amazing, Anna! I love both of the hymns, too! The Lord bless you!
?♥️??
But, Rachel, the song that has been on my heart during this Corona virus pandemic, is one that the Lord gave me last year, after my church suffered a grievous split. I wrote the poem first, and the tune followed shortly thereafter. Jesus uses everything in our lives for our good and His glory.
“You Bring Me Low”
1. You bring me low, that I might be more holy;
You bring me low, that I might rest in Thee.
When I am strong I’m only proud and boastful;
You bring me low, to learn humility.
2. You bring me low, that I might be more caring;
You bring me low, that I might truly see
My pathway lies through valleys more than mountains;
You bring me low, to taste of Calvary.
3. When Jesus walked this earth for poor, lost sinners,
He was unloved, rejected by His own;
He died alone to take away my burden,
And rose again, to draw me sweetly home.
4. You bring me low, that I might be like Jesus.
You bring me low, that I might bow the knee.
One day you’ll wipe away my tears in heaven,
And raise me up, through all eternity!
You’ll raise me up through all eternity!
Amen!
Sheri!?✨?? THIS IS SUCH A BlESSING. Thank you for sharing! I am reminded of Psalm 116 where it says, “The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and HE helped me.” Thank you for encouraging me heart today with this beautiful song the Lord put in your heart! Isn’t it amazing how He uses some of the hardest of situations to teach us humility and draw us all the nearer to Himself?!
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:29
Yes, it is! It’s in coming to the end of ourselves that we can best see the enduring Form of our Dear Lord! Toward the end of difficult trials, He steps out of the “shadows” and teaches us to take His hand. :)
Love love love all these verses and hymns so very much!♥️♥️♥️ Thank you Rachel and everyone else for sharing. This song has been in my heart and on my lips lately. ?
I’ll Never Leave You (by Mac Lynch)
As Joseph sought the Lord his God, with all his heart,
God laid on him a burden he would bear, yet not alone.
The Lord was with this holy man to bring to pass His master plan.
Through foreign lands, God walked beside His own.
Chorus
I’ll never leave you, never forsake you.
By waters still, in pastures green, I’ll often take you.
But when I break you, so that my name be glorified,
I’ll never leave you, never forsake you.
Though fires and floods would seem to hide His plan for you,
Though trials and afflictions seem to take away your song,
Though you may never understand, just trust in His upholding hand.
In time you’ll learn, He’s been there all along.
I’ll never leave you, never forsake you.
By waters still, in pastures green, I’ll often take you.
But when I break you, so that my name be glorified,
I’ll never leave you, never forsake you.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.”
Psalms 46:1-3, 5-7 KJV
♥️?♥️
What a beautiful song, Alyssa!
Isaiah 26:3-4
3. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. 4. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:
It is! Mac Lynch is one of my very favorite song writers ?.
And you could call those two verses my “life verses”!?
?
