Spring100 MILE LOG
…………………………………
…………………………………
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”
Hebrews 12:1
There are so many brothers and sisters in Christ that have gone before me whose lives encourage me in my daily spiritual race! Their testimonies of God’s provision and faithfulness spur me to press forward with endurance. I think of Stephen in Acts 7 or the Apostle Paul or Corrie Ten Boom or well you get the point ?… I guess that would be the “great cloud of witnesses” referred to in Hebrews 12:1!? Some have already made it to the finish line of life and others are still running with their eyes steadfastly fixed on the prize before them! This brings me to what I want to share with you all for today’s Spring100 post. Sheri introduced me to Gita, our oldest Spring100 participant at 98 years old, who has not only already finished her 100 miles for Spring100 but is running with endurance her spiritual race and living a life that inspires so many! Her testimony of God’s faithfulness throughout her entire life is nearly overwhelming! When Sheri shared Gita’s life story with me, I knew you all would be as blessed as I was by it. So, without further ado, I would love to introduce you all to Gita, a fellow Spring100 walker, encourager, inspiration, and sister in Christ! ?
Gita is almost 98 years old. When she was a young woman, Russian soldiers invaded her country of Estonia. After she endured and survived many weeks of constant bombing of Tallinn, Estonia’s capital where she lived, Gita and what was left of her family fled the country the evening before Russia invaded. They sailing away on a hospital ship called the Moero. But the next morning, out in the Baltic Sea, the Moero was torpedoed by Russian planes, and sank in about 6 minutes, taking nearly 4,000 people onboard down with it, including her first husband. They had been married only one year. Gita and her younger brother, Erich, managed to jump from the sinking ship into separate large life preservers. Gita’s was filled with other people, but her brother’s had only one other man in it. Erich had dreamed the night before that the ship would be sunk and he would die!
Gita life preserver floated away from the 3 boats that came to rescue survivors. After floating in the freezing water for 4 hours, they were picked up by a German U-boat (submarine) and taken to what was then called Gdansk, Poland. Her brother never showed up at the displaced person’s camp, and she learned from witnesses on another rescue ship that the “young man in a life ring with only two men” had fallen from the knotted rescue line they threw to him, and he had been sucked into the ship’s propeller. Gita was devastated. He was her final family member, except for her grandmother who was still in Estonia. She never saw her grandmother again, either.
Gita wandered from one country to the next with no home, no family, no nation; but God always sustained her with several miracles, pulling her from certain death time after time. Finally, she ended up behind the American lines and when WW2 ended, she met an officer that would become her husband and bring her to America! She had 6 children, got saved, and was part of a group of 5 people that started my church back in 1970. She loves the Lord with all her heart, and still serves Him, baking cookies and cakes as gifts for many people, old and young alike. AND she gardens with the flowers she loves, and walks 3 miles a day!
Thank you, Sheri, for taking time to send in Gita’s story! What a blessing. ?? We have some fabulous photos below and this week’s photo theme seems to be “Spring100 meetups”!? Y’all, keep up the fabulous job and enjoy week 7 of your Spring100 walking/running! ?????

It’s so fun to see everyone walking/running! Gita’s story was amazing, wow! Thank you for sharing. :) I loved all those photos–it was especially fun to see some familiar faces (hi Hannah and Naomi! ;) ) this week as well! Hooray for Week 7!!! Let us all keep pressing on! Great job, everyone!!
Isn’t Gita’s story amazing?! Glad you are seeing familiar faces. It seems each week someone sends in a photo who hasn’t yet! Love seeing new faces. ??? You’re doing fabulous, Annie! Keep up the wonderful work! :)
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”Ps 28:7
That’s a great question! I would walk with John G. Paton and ask him about his family life growing up! :D
Great choice, Kina!! That would be quite a mile. :) ??
“The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.” Ps 28:8
Patricia St. John. I love her children’s books. Her insight into human behavior reminds me of C.S. Lewis. I want to hear stories about being a nurse in Morocco.
I had to look up Patricia St. John! I have never heard of her before. ? Keep up the wonderful walking, Katina!
“When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.”Ps 27:8
I would love to walk with Jesus when he was on earth! And Charles Spurgeon!
A mile walked with Jesus Christ would be unbelievably amazing. ???
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.-Ps 27:14
I would so walk with Amy Carmichael! But with the way the Holy Spirit led her life, we might end up stopping somewhere in addition to the walk! :)
Hehe, I loved your remark about Amy Carmichael!!! Very true. And great choice!! ????
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Ps 27:1
Wow, that’s a rather hard question. There are sooo many people from history I’d love to meet. One of my favorite’s Is Louis Zamperini (if you aren’t familiar with him, look him up. Great story!). I’d want him to tell me his story in person and give me tips on running! I’d also love to talk with J.R.R. Tolkien about Middle Earth and all sorts of other things! Corrie and Betsie Ten Boom are also some of my favorites!
WOW…. I just looked up Louis Zamperini!!!!?? WOWOWOW what a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.-Ps 40:4
Where do I start? I love history, so it’s hard to pick just one. :) :) :) The person who first came to mind was Corrie Ten Boom. She is one of my favorite people in history. Another person I’d love to walk with is J. R. R. Tolkien. He was literally a genius with writing The Lord of the Rings, and it would be amazing to talk about it with the creator of it. Also William Wilberforce. If you haven’t seen the movie Amazing Grace, you need to. It is one of the best movies ever made. I have seen it multiple times and it still inspires me. He didn’t give up until the work God gave him was finished.
Thank you so much for sharing Gita’s story!!! I felt like I was reading a history book. It’s exciting to be ‘walking’ with you Gita!
Corrie Ten Boom’s life is such an amazing testimony! Truly amazing how the Lord used her and continues to use her life to point many to Him. ?
I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.-Ps 40:8
Hands down, I would want to walk a mile with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. WOW, can you even imagine how totally, mind-bogglingly WONDERFUL that would be?! I think my second choice would be the Apostle Paul. I don’t think I’d ask much, if anything, (I probably wouldn’t be able to open my mouth, or even walk for that matter), but it would be amazing to just listen to them!
Yes, can you imagine how speechless we would find ourselves in the presence of the Lord?! ??
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.-Ps 40:16
Greetings:) God bless you all!
I think I’d like to go on a walk with Gita!!!
“My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.” Psalms 121
?I agree, I would love to walk a few miles with Gita too! ??
Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.-Ps 40:5
It has been a blessing to walk with her for many years! You would love her! :)
Enjoyed reading Gita’s story, thanks for sharing, Sheri!
